Trick or Treat

Dear Parents,

What a tremendous Red Ribbon Week and to finish it off with the Fun Run.  Students are enjoying poetry, and don’t forget to mark your calendars for Coffee House Poetry on November 29th at 9:30am.

Thank you 4th grade parents for hosting the Friday Feast! Everything was delicious, and this treat is appreciated.

The deadline for the Dead Word project is Wednesday the 31st.  Make sure all components on the orange project sheet have been included on the final project.  Students may bring completed projects in Monday, Tuesday, and definitely by Wednesday.

The funeral for the Dead Words will be Wednesday morning at 8am.  Students are encouraged to dress in black in memory of their lost words.

Students should then type and illustrate the poem (an example is pictured below).  Students should have this poem memorized and ready to recite with feeling on November 26th. This poem will be recited before parents and peers at Coffee House Poetry on the 29th.  Students will also recite an original poem of their creation. Autumn in the Air

Dear Parents,

What a fabulous week of learning we’ve had!  Your students should have come home this week with information regarding the Dead Word Funeral.  Here is a sample picture of a previous student’s work. There are several items at the dollar store this time of year that may be helpful in your child’s construction/crafting of this project.  Please follow the guidelines for the project on the bright orange sheet of paper your child received on Wednesday. This example does not have all of the required elements.

Denim Drive
Sadly, our classroom service project, the annual Denim Drive, will come to a close on October 19th.  These new or gently used denim items will be donated to the clothes closet that serves the families of Round Rock.  If you have not yet done so, please take a few minutes to go through your closets and find items you find suitable to donate.  Thank you for all of your help promoting and supporting this classroom enrichment opportunity.

Fall Library Reading Incentive
From October 2nd - November 9th, the library is holding its fall reading incentive program.  A purple sheet went home last week. For reading homework, your child will need to read a minimum of 20 minutes each night to work towards accomplishing the goal of reading a book from the different sections around the library as well as a Texas Bluebonnet Book.  The form will need to be signed by you. Your child needs to show me the completed form before turning it into the library. If they need a new purple form, they can go down to the library and get one.

Talented and Gifted
There will be a parent information night on November 6th at 6:00pm in the library.

Enjoy That Looooooong Weekend

Dear Parents,

We had another great week in fourth grade!  Students have been creating advertisements to promote our Denim Drive, which is being hosted by all 4th graders!  Excitement has also been building to see who will win the election to represent our class in Student Council. I can’t wait to hear their speeches on Friday, October 12th.  I am so very proud of all the students who are forming a campaign to run for this position. That in and of itself shows leadership and initiative. Way to go!

Dead Word Funeral Tombstone
On Wednesday, your child will be assigned a “dead” word.  This is a word that is commonly overused in their writing.  In class the students will find 8-10 synonyms that could be used to replace that “dead” word.  (ex: said = exclaimed, yelled, whispered…) At home each child will need to create:
  1. A free standing tombstone or coffin
  2. Engraved on the front should be the dead word and a list of 8-10 surviving words (synonyms)
Tombstones are due Wednesday, October 31st, or as early as Monday, October 29th.  Students will attend a funeral for the dearly departed words on October 31st. Students will need to dress in black clothing as is appropriate for such a sad event.

Student Council
If your child is running for student council, remember that campaign posters can be up from October 3rd - 12th.  Speeches will be giving October 12th, and we will vote on that day also by secret ballot. Two representatives will be named from each class on October 15th.  Their first meeting will be on October 22nd.

UPCOMING DATES

October 19 - Denim Drive ends
